Why your auto repair shop doesn't show on Google and how to fix it
When someone's car breaks down, they don't search for "the best repair shop in the country." They search for "garage near me" or "brake repair in [their neighborhood]", almost always from a phone and almost always in a hurry. If your shop doesn't appear in that search, it's not bad luck: there's a technical reason behind it, and it's almost always one of these six.
The six reasons that keep coming up
You have no Google Business Profile, or it's incomplete
The map with three repair shops that appears above the search results comes from Google Business Profile, not your website. If it's missing, or lacks real hours, services (brakes, tires, MOT, general mechanics, electrics...) and photos of the shop, you're at a disadvantage against competitors who have it complete.
Your website doesn't say what you repair or which brands you work with
Many people search for something more specific than 'repair shop': 'clutch replacement in [city]' or 'specialist [brand] garage'. If your website only says 'auto repair shop' without detailing services and specialties, Google has no way to match your page with those specific searches.
There's not a single price or estimate anywhere
Fear of being overcharged at a garage is real and common. A rough price range, an explanation of how estimates work, or simply being transparent about the process builds the trust that makes someone call you instead of the shop next door.
The website is slow or doesn't work well on mobile
Someone stranded on the roadside looking for a garage won't wait. If your website is slow to load on mobile data or requires zooming to read the phone number, that person is already calling the next result.
There are no recent reviews
New (and replied-to) reviews are a signal Google values and are also the first thing anyone comparing you with another shop looks at. No tricks needed: just ask after every service.
Your details don't match everywhere
Name, address, and phone number must be identical on your website, Google listing, Instagram, and any directory (Yellow Pages, etc.). When they don't match, Google loses confidence about which information is correct and that hurts your local ranking.
How to fix it, in order
You don't need to do everything at once. This is the order that gives the most result for the least effort:
- Create or complete your Google Business Profile: real hours, all services, photos of the shop and team.
- Add a page or section per service to your website (brakes, tires, MOT...) with the brands or specialties you work with.
- Include a rough price range or a brief explanation of how you estimate jobs.
- Check mobile loading speed, especially if you have unoptimized photos.
- Ask for reviews after every repair and reply to all of them.
- Check that your name, address, and phone number are identical on your website, Google, social media, and directories.
How long it takes to notice a difference
Your Google listing usually takes weeks to show up on the map. Website changes take longer: one to three months to reflect in rankings. Anyone promising the top spot in a week isn't being honest with you.
An honest note about auto repair shops
I don't yet have a finished repair shop case in my portfolio — I'm telling you because I'd rather be transparent before you ask. What I can offer is a diagnostic audit of your current website ($300) before any bigger commitment: you'll know exactly what's failing and what's worth fixing first.
