Why your hair salon doesn't show on Google and how to fix it

You search "hair salon" plus your neighborhood name, and three salons that aren't yours show up. It's not bad luck or a matter of paying more: it's almost always six specific reasons, and all of them can be fixed.

The six reasons that keep coming up

01

You have no Google Business Profile, or it's incomplete

When someone searches "hair salon" plus their neighborhood name, Google first shows the map with three businesses. You don't get in there by having a website: you get in by having a complete business listing, with exact address, real hours, phone number, services, and photos. A listing without hours or without a well-chosen category almost never makes it into that block of three.

02

Your website never says where you are

Many hair salon websites talk about cuts, color, and treatments, but never write out the city or neighborhood. Google needs to read it in the text to connect you with searches in that area. If your address only appears inside an image or an embedded map, it isn't written text as far as Google is concerned.

03

The website takes too long to open on mobile

Almost all of these searches happen on the phone and on mobile data. If your website takes more than three seconds to open, many people go back before even seeing it, and that drop-off also hurts your ranking. It's usually caused by huge, unoptimized photos uploaded straight from a phone.

04

You have a single page that tries to say everything at once

If the same text mixes haircuts, color, bridal styling, and treatments, there's no single page Google can show as a clear answer to "balayage highlights" in your city. Splitting your main services into their own pages, each with its own title, gives every search somewhere to land.

05

There are no recent reviews

Between two similar hair salons, Google favors the one with new, answered reviews. You don't need to ask for anything unusual: just ask happy customers when they pay, and reply to all of them, including the regulars.

06

Your details don't match everywhere

Your name, address, and phone number need to be written exactly the same on your website, your Google listing, Instagram, and any directories you appear in. When they don't match, Google isn't sure which one is correct and shows you less.

How to fix it, in order

You don't need to do it all at once. This is the order that gives the best results for the least effort:

  1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile: category, hours, tappable phone number, services, and real photos of the salon.
  2. Write your city and neighborhood in the website text, on the homepage and in the footer, along with the full address.
  3. Reduce photo file sizes so the website opens quickly on mobile data.
  4. Give your two or three most-searched services their own page, with a title and explanation.
  5. Ask for reviews consistently and reply to all of them.
  6. Check that your name, address, and phone number are identical on your website, on Google, and on your social media.

How long it takes to notice a difference

Your Google listing can start moving within weeks. Website changes take a bit longer, one to three months, because Google has to re-crawl it. If someone promises you the top spot within a week, they're selling you smoke.

An honest note about hair salons

I don't yet have a finished hair salon case to show you, and I'm not going to make one up. What I do have are real design proposals from other local businesses and a working method you can judge before paying anything: the audit tells you in writing what's wrong with your website and your presence on Google, and you decide whether to move forward.
